Introduction
Intwine Energy was founded in 2010 as a division of Intwine Connect to deliver an integrated family of Internet connected energy management products to utilities and direct to consumers. In a time where access to the Internet is nearly ubiquitous, and energy continues to be a concern in political and social circles, Intwine Energy offers products that utilize the ease of Internet access to enable smart energy management from anywhere at anytime.
Driving Forces Behind Energy Management
The demand by consumers and businesses for energy continues to increase and it will soon outstrip the supply of energy if this trend continues. Due to this, energy providers are now seeking solutions for residential demand management and time-of-use pricing programs to help maintain equilibrium between supply and demand. On the other hand, other consumers are already striving to use less energy for several reasons. Consumers may wish for better energy management solutions due to the rising cost of energy, or to support the green movement.
Internet Connected Devices
Over the past decade, WiFi has been widely integrated into smart phones, laptops and other access points, allowing for strong network redundancy and the ability to “connect” nearly anywhere. More recent technological developments and decreasing cost have allowed for the penetration of WiFi-enabled products outside of the traditional markets. Now nearly any electronic device can conceivably connect to the Internet.
Opportunity
Intwine Energy sees opportunity in providing solutions that take advantage of ubiquitous Internet access and the need for smart energy management. The company has taken the challenge out of smart-grid applications for the utilities and for the consumer by providing a complete spectrum of integrated technology and services that enable the monitoring and control of energy usage. The end result is smarter energy use and a significant reduction in energy cost.
Applications
Intwine Energy is developing a family of devices for the consumer to allow smart energy usage. Thermostats, whole house power monitors, and smart load controllers (for pool pumps and appliances) will offer a complete, affordable solution to remotely and securely manage personal energy usage. All Intwine devices will connect to the Internet via WiFi and integrate into the MyIntwine™ Personal Energy Network™ a consumer controlled Internet portal for home energy management devices.
For the utilities, Intwine Energy is developing solutions that allow for demand response capabilities, two-way communications with the end-user for Time-of-Use pricing updates, and can be quickly deployed to supplement Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Intwine will work with each utility to customize the user-interface based on needs as well as the desired look and feel. Items that are offered included desired demand and response actions/alerts, tiered pricing, and single-home view and “block view” (e.g. entire neighborhoods).
Products
The first available in a family of thermostats are the IECT-210 and the IECT-220, which enable two-way communication between the user and the HVAC system to remotely monitor and control energy usage, driving major reductions in energy usage. The thermostats allow users to access the thermostat from any Internet connection and the thermostat can access pricing updates and messages from utility providers.
The IECT-210 can control up to two stages of heat and two stages of cool, and is programmable up to four independent periods per day, seven days a week. The IECT-220 supports up to three stages of heat, two stages of cool, multi-stage heat pumps, humidifier, de-humidifier and external air baffles. It offers on-screen alerts to remind customers when consumables, such as air filters, humidifier pads and UV bulbs should be checked or changed to help keep the system running efficiently. The IECT-220 has user-friendly menu-driven programming, which is programmable up to seven periods per day, seven days a week.
